First, my thoughts are out to those who have and continue to suffer, and their friends and family.
Second, I cannot help but be stunned by the magnitude of this. The images are just...astounding.
Everyone here ok? Tell your stories, thoughts, and concerns.

Akiko's family is, AFAIK, OK. They're near Tokyo. According to Yahoo Japan, the area was hit with a 3.0, which according to Akiko is nothing out of the ordinary.
The situation with the nuclear power plant is really fucked up. People invoke Chernobyl. Gods, I hope not. You'd think that Japan of all places would have contingency plans in place for something like this*, but it seems to have caught them as flat-footed as it would have anyone else.
*Not just because of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but because they effing know they're smack-dab in the middle of not just one but several fault lines.
And I couldn't help it -- when I watched the Fukushima video, and directly afterwards I read "Mel Gibson charged with battery..."
If Mel Gibson is battery-charged, maybe we should send him to Japan to provide electricity for Fukushima.

Good to hear Akiko's family is alright. Yeah, one bit of analysis I read stated that had an earthquake like this hit California, at least two plants would have likely gone into complete meltdown.
This event is probably going to put a big stop to a lot of the political and public momentum for building new nuclear plants...

Hopefully. According to the news here, the reactor is already in meltdown, the Japanese government's denials notwithstanding.
Damn.

According to today's newspaper, the earthquake moved Japan's main island, Honshu, 2.4 meters, and changed the Earth's rotational axis by 10 centimeters.
