OK folks...as one of the more open/overt fetishist comic book people, Claremont has a (well-deserved) reputation for certain tropes. So, as a little game, let's see if we can list all the regular ones, specifically from his X-Men Run.
1) The Villain must always be more powerful that the heroes as well as being more dangerous or smarter - or what's the point? -this one is taken from a direct quote of his from an interview I read way back when.
2) The X-Men are contractually obligated to mention at some point that the odds are against them "as usual" and that the X-Men specialize in doing the impossible. 3) "You're good. I'm the best." is a phrase that will be uttered at some point during a fight with an X-person. 4) Whenever an X-person refers to the possiblity of dying, that someone mentions that the X-Men tend to come back from the dead with alarming regularity. 5) At some point, the master villain will at the very least flirt with Storm, if not outright try to seduce and/or marry her.

"One thing about the X-Men -- you can usually tell where they've been."
Short, clipped sentences, especially in the running narration. "Gambit flips his hand down. Same motion brings it back up. Energy powers sent it forward," etc.

Most of the female characters will get at least one scene where they kick ass. Most of the male ones won't.
Certain characters will have catch phrases, particularly with regards to their powerset.
Brief diversion to introduce a mysterious subplot.

Every female character will, at some point, be decked out in leather fetish gear.
No matter what changes happen to Professor X, he will invariably revert back to being a) wheelchair-bound, and b) a dick.

Every female character will, at some point, be decked out in leather fetish gear. That may actually be a Byrne rule...

"No quarter asked. None given." "Exact change only"?

"No quarter asked. None given." So the X-Men didn't get to use pay phones?

Brief diversion to introduce a mysterious subplot. Which will never be resolved.

At lest 95% of the time, anyway. Every once in a while he slips up and finishes one.
