Some time ago, I wrote a hardboiled mystery novel. The type that I enjoy reading, in the spirit of Mickey Spillane and Robert B. Parker. If you were active on SA at the time, you might remember it. I tuckerized a lot of SA members. I had a lot of fun writing it, and even thought to make it a series. Anyway. Several years and too many rejections later, it turned out to be the straw that broke the proverbial camel's neck. Instead of finally launching my career, it buried it. Destroyed it. Made me realize that no, I am clearly not talented or competent enough to achieve the one thing that gave my life meaning. To compound this, I decided to go into self-publishing. Self-publishing is for losers and failures. By self-publishing The Coldest Blood, I officially acknowledge that that is what I am. Anyway, it's now available for the Kindle. DRM free too, because I believe that if you buy something you should own it. The Coldest Blood is now available for the Kindle at Amazon US bit.ly/cD5ez3 and Amazon UK bit.ly/cAvjlJAnd yes, after reading the above, you probably wonder what kind of a sales pitch that is supposed to be. It's not. The sales pitch is this: Are you in the novel? If so, in which way? And do you live, or do you die?

The cover. After an artist who had agreed to do it on a back-end deal let me down (business as usual), I found a site that sells royalty-free stock photos. The cover below was not my first choice, but my first choice would have been too big for the Amazon uploader. It's affordable - just €3. Two sales, and I've earned back the investment.

Self-publishing = nothing to be ashamed of in this market.
Good for you.

Self-publishing = nothing to be ashamed of in this market. Good for you. No, bad for me. Because a) I maintain my position that self-publishing is for failures, and by doing it I admit that I have failed beyond redemption. b) Nobody's buying the damn thing. Then again, it's a win-win situation. If this doesn't change, I have the numbers to tell everyone who suggested I should try self-publishing to STFU. If it suddenly takes off, I'll eat crow on that, but all the way to the bank.

BTW: any K-Boxer and/or Sanity Assassin who doesn't have a Kindle but wants to read this, speak up. All I ask in return is a review on Amazon and/or your blog (if you have one).

Without going on either side of the debate, someone told me today that of the books published in Sweden most don't sell anything beyond what the depository libraries buy (which is about three or four copies, I think).

Considering the popularity of Swedish mystery writers here in Germany, I find that difficult to believe.

Oh, the very few who sell a lot sell a lot. But many, many titles don't sell at all or very little.

My wife is currently into astrology, and yesterday she told me that according to my horoscope, I was born to write.
My reply was that it's a pity that apparently, nobody was born to read me.
