IIRC Del Rey Manga first used the 3-in-1 omnibus format to finish a series started by another manga publisher (forgot the title). Next year they'll be using it for Suzuka 13/14/15. $22 for one big book instead of $14 each for three smaller ones is a good deal, though it does seem like the series isn't selling that well. Only two volumes of Suzuka were out this year. Probably more cost effective to complete the series with two omnibus volumes instead of 6 regular ones.
Wonder how they'll handle the cover art.

Yeah. When Kodansha moved the Samurai Deeper Kyo series from Tokyopop to DelRey they released the final few volumes in a three-in-one omnibus. There's a rumor based on some Amazon listings that DelRey's doing this with many of their lower selling titles. Omnibus listing have been found for Mushishi, Yagyu Ninja Scrolls and a few others.
