NEW (HALF) SEASON (eight episodes) STARTS THIS WEEKEND!!!! 10-18-09!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When we last saw the Venture Brothers:

Molotov Cocktease and Hunter Gatherer (Brock Samson's transgender mentor) secretly hired Molotov's top rivals in the assassins busines to kill Brock under the guise of Brock's employer OSI putting a bounty on Samson's head. Brock killed them, in the process unknowingly eliminating the competition for Molotov's brand new assassination squad, making them the go-to group for people who have money to burn and who want someone murdered.

Brock meanwhile has quit working for the both the Venture family and OSI, having gotten fed up with the craziness and the revelation from "ORB", where it's revealed that Brock is just another pawn in a century-long government conspiracy to murder the Venture Family men in order to keep them from using a mystic artifact, which is said to have the power to bring about utopia on Earth.

Brock's resignation comes at a horrible time though: Monarch has (unknowingly) slaughtered all known copies of the Hank and Dean Venture clone slugs. Which, given the implication that the show has made that cloning in the Venture Brothers Universe has to be done in real time and none of the comic book instant adult clone junk, means that the next time Dean or Hank die, it will be a permenant death.

Meanwhile longtime Monarch henchman 24 is dead, killed in a car bombing that may or may not have been brought about by the Pupa Twins/Murderous Moppets of Doctor Girlfriend, who have been quite open with their desire to get rid of Monarch's other henchmen in order to better establish themselves as the Doctor's main henchmen.

Meanwhile Monarch himself has found a loophole in his arching of Jonas Venture Jr to resume arching Rusty, due to JJ literally trying to kill Monarch during their fights.

Sgt. Hatred meanwhile, on the verge of divorce from his trophy Indian wife, has apparently renounced evil and is now living with the Venture Family as their new defacto bodyguard. And Hank Venture now has an asshole friend named Dermott, who has confessed to Monarch's henchmen that he is Brock Samson's bastard son.

Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer have stated repeatedly that the entire point of The Venture Bros. is to showcase failure, and to be fair, we've been subjected to plenty of failure in the first half of Season 4, but along the way, something profoundly bizarre has happened.

Unlike the people running DC and Marvel, whose characters Jackson and Doc have devoted a great deal of the show to parodying, Jackson and Doc themselves seem to have realized that failure can actually be a learning experience, and thus, we've been treated to an arguably show premise-breaking series of instances in which characters have become winners precisely because they are such failures.

Yes, Phantom Limb went completely batshit in "The Revenge Society," and Sgt. Hatred's pedo-temptation was harped on far too strongly in "Self-Medication," but goddamn, in so very many other ways, all of these characters have undergone a reverse-Flanderization.

Rusty and Doctor Girlfriend actually shared a surprisingly affectionate moment in "Return to Malice," during which the Monarch also finally put the Moppets in their fucking place. Dean started down a trippy vision quest path toward becoming a super-scientist in "Perchance to Dean," and actually got over his crush on Triana enough to talk to other girls his own age in "The Better Man." Hank has actually gained enough of a clue about semi-functional adult relationships to give Captain Sunshine a reality check in "Handsome Ransom," and Rusty realized that, however bad his own problems might be, he's still light years less screwed up than the rest of the former boy adventurers in "Self-Medication."

For fuck's sake, if you want pure, condensed epic motherfucking win, all you have to do is watch just about any scene in "The Better Man" or "Pinstripes & Poltergeists." Dermott actually gives good advice! Doctor Orpheus not only gets over his grudge against the OutRider, but he also proves that he was the superior sorcerer all along! Jefferson Twilight discovers that he's goddamn magic! Billy Quizboy not only gets inducted into the Order of the Triad, but he has his "moxie" praised by no less than Hunter Gathers!

And if you want ultimate bad-ass victorious win distilled into a single character, you need look no further than FUCK YEAH TWO-TON 21. Who are the Monarch's other henchmen afraid of in "Return to Malice"? It's sure as hell not the Monarch himself, as seen when 21 engages in what is simultaneously the most hilarious and terrifying nerd-rage argument ever set to screen ("FUCKING PLESIOSAUR!!!"). In "Pinstripes & Poltergeists," who brings Monstroso to heel in his initial negotiation with the Monarch? Again, definitely not the Monarch; as soon as 21 acts on the ghostly advice of 24 to whip the piss out of Monstroso's henchmen, Monstroso himself says, "Ah, so you must be 21," and then agrees to do business with the Monarch right away, because that is how far and wide 21's rep as a take-no-shit fuck-you-up ass-kicker has traveled.

Not only does Doctor Girlfriend notice the changes in 21 as early as "Return to Malice," but she's practically throwing her pussy at him in "Pinstripes & Poltergeists," by complimenting him on his good work in the sort of saucy, seductive voice that she normally reserves exclusively for the Monarch, while rubbing her tits all over him. And of course, in what TV Tropes has already classified as 21's Crowning Moment of Awesome, HE HELD HIS OWN AGAINST BROCK SAMSON. Yes, he still got put down in the end, but the mere fact that he didn't get killed instantly is, within the rules of The Venture Bros. universe, roughly akin to getting in a boxing match with GOD, and fighting him to a DRAW. And best of all? He's lost none of his core nerdity.

"So, you're a hero now, huh?" Brock chuckles, throwing his arm around 21's shoulders.
"Well ... yeah, I guess I am," 21 shrugs his shoulders, as they walk off together.

Yeah, you ARE, Gary. Even before you tried to pull the Jedi mind trick on Monstroso, you were already MY fucking hero.
