Brevity is the soul of wit, they say, and indeed, it is the soul of communication. All truly important information in the world can be conveyed with just a few words. (Yes, I recognize the irony of this coming from someone who uses so very many words.) "It's cancer." "I love you." "I do." "I want a divorce." "Holocaust." "He's not going to make it." "He's going to make it."
Ernest Hemingway once said that the greatest challenge of writing would be to create a story with a beginning, middle and end, which conveyed the maximum amount of information, and had an emotional heft, and to do it in seven words or less. (His contribution to the micro-genre: "For sale, baby shoes, never worn." My favorite one ever created was from Alan Moore: "in time. I appear to have traveled".)
A few words can tell a story. A few words can say a thousand more. A few words can redraw the map of the universe.
My contribution to the genre was determined at 10:48 a.m., Sept. 10, 2009:
"Second ultrasound. It's a girl."

Ahhhh... the joy of girls.
Welcome to Hell, Paul. Welcome to Hell... Because no matter how difficult you think your boy may get.... NOTHING compares to how much your girls will drive you absolutely up the wall.
And it's worth every minute of it, even if you don't think so at the time.
