War (2007), starring Jet Li and Jason Stetham
Jason Stetham is FBI agent Crawford, and he's hunting the assassin Rogue, who killed his partner three years before. Now Rogue has resurfaced in San Francisco, but he's working for the Triads, not the Yakuza, as he did before. But something's a bit off about the whole thing. It seems as if Rogue's playing both sides against the middle.
I like War. I like it a lot. I like it more than I had expected. I went in expecting some slam-bang martial arts high collateral damage actioner. And yes, it has action. It also has intrigue, double crosses, triple crosses and a number of twists and turns. As I usually do, I sat there mentally calling out what will happen. I was right half the time. The other half, I went, "Whu--?" And the twist at the end...
Definitely worth your time and money. Go see it now. You will thank me later.
(I will nutshell-review movies in this thread in irregular intervals, and anyone else is invited to join in.)

I started watching War a couple of weeks back but I couldn't quite get into it. Partly it may have been Statham being Statham Character 1A, partly me not feeling like that type of movie at the time. I'll probably give it another go sometime in the not too distant future.

I really wanted to see that but heard that the hand to hand showdown between Li and Statham wasn't very good. Still, it's something I'd probably watch if it came on TV.
Over the weekend I caught Doomsday though. Wow, that was fun! The car chase at the end was unbelievably cool, as was about 90% of the movie. Very good stuff, go Neil Marshall!

Whoever told you that about the hand-to-hand showdown between JS and JL probably expected something very martial artsy. Which it isn't, it's a brawl, and a fairly short one. Maybe if Statham were a martial artist... But he isn't.
War's showdown packed a completely different punch.

Statham's no slouch, he's not Jet Li or anything, but still. He was good in both Transporter flicks when it came to martial arts, and he does apparently practice kick boxing. But I'd probably give it watch if it ever comes on TV or HBO. Good to know it was still good.

I watched G.I. Jane earlier today. Not a great film by any measure, but Demi Moore looks good in a crew cut and looking it up on IMDb just now showed me they have a "Head Shaving" key word which may have been more than I needed to know. The most closely related key words are, in falling order: - Death
- Blood
- Murder
- Nudity
- Violence
- Blood Splatter
- Father Son Relationship
- Female Nudity
- Gore
- Police
- Revenge
- Title Spoken By Character

MIRRORS. Oi, that was dire. I actually liked the effects and setup, but the resolution kind of annoyed me. I mean, I'm all for anti-heroes and no-win solutions, but when your *ANSWER* is to KIDNAP A NUN AT GUNPOINT AND FORCE HER TO BE POSSESSED BY DEMONS, I think your movie has gone off the rails.
Actually, that sounds like a Call of Cthulhu plot I might have come up with when I was seventeen or something--I was kind of a dark kid that way.

This is probably old news to you guys, but today was the first time I heard of it. Oliver Stone directs "W." A movie about the Bush presidency. To be released in November. www.imdb.com/title/tt1175491/

I wonder what he'll make of the coke and AWOL issues? Judging by the trailers, he's tackling all of Bush's dysfunctionalities head on: And it's coming out in OCTOBER.

Saw Religulous this weekend (the Bill Maher anti-religion documentary)
Quick notes: -Although Maher goes all out in his condemnation of all religion, I think he gives Catholics a little bit fairer treatment (he was raised Catholic) than he does Evangelicals and Muslims. -His message is purely "Get rid of religion, or we're all gonna die because people who believe and get into power now have the power to create their self-fulfilling doomsday prophecies" -yeah, there's clearly some cutting to make the guys more foolish than they are, but there's also a fair amount of compassion for everyone, and he does try to be less of an asshole than he might otherwise have been.
