Yeah, I'm not optimistic though given Iron Man has been the most high-profile of the Avengers, plus we get a second scene (with Banner) of Tony pulling the exact same shit. In fact, most of the non-Fury dialogue was his.

Okay, so...
The reports that Avengers would actually be more like "SHIELD the Movie guest-starring The Avengers" already made me wary.
The trailers, which look very much like "Iron Man 3, guest-starring some guys he can be witty at" turn me off even more.
Unlike the original Iron Man movie, where each trailer and tidbit got everyone more psyched, everything I see about Avengers make me less interested in the movie.
Make no mistake, I'll go see it anyway. I think. But my optimism about the movie is gone.

That's pretty much what I've been expecting anyway, the same way the X-Men movies became more and more Wolverine and His X-Friends.

To be fair, the X-Men movies were always "Wolverine and the X-Men".
According to Bleeding Cool, Feige has announced that after Avengers, they will use the other movies to lead in to Avengers 2, starting with Iron Man 3.
They have a good thing going right now. Making it follow the comics model (crossoveritis, continuity porn) would IMO harm it, perhaps destroy it.

To be fair, the X-Men movies were always "Wolverine and the X-Men". Yeah, but it was a lot less pronounced in the first movie which was arguably at least as much about Rogue.

In any case, what I really HATE, and which proves to me already that Whedon DOESN'T GET IT is that in the trailer...
... it seems that Tony Stark gets to do the Inspiring Speech. You know the one: "If we can't save this world, we can at least avenge it."
Not only is it out of character. It's also more like something (any) Nick Fury would say. Also, any team that has Captain America...
... is required to have Captain America make the Inspiring Speech.

Downey is the most bankable star in the bunch, so I would expect him to be played up a bit (especially in the advertising), but Whedon is no stranger to quality ensembles, after all. I suspect we'll start out with Cap being still somewhat shellshocked and hesitant, and then slowly coming unto his own by the end of the movie...setting him up to take charge in Avengers 2 (by which time Downey will likely be out of the picture anyway).

Well, let's be honest here as well. RDJ has more drawing power than the rest of the cast with the possible exception of Sam Jackson, as well.
Fans want to see an Avengers movie. But to the studio guys paying the bills, they're going to want to watch the movie have a focus on those two and possibly Scarjo more than the others.
And to be honest from my perspective, out of the entire cast, Cap is my least favorite Avenger, and going with the Civil War analogy above, just as responsible for starting the damn thing as Tony given that with the amount of influence he has, he might have been able to prevent the whole thing through sheer force of personality. (One of the hallmarks of Civil War of course, however, is bad writing, so...)

Well, let's be honest here as well. RDJ has more drawing power than the rest of the cast with the possible exception of Sam Jackson, as well. Partly agreed. As in, I think that Jackson might have some geek cred, but I don't think he has any real drawing power. So, yes, Downey is the only real star in the ensemble. In that regard, it makes sense to emphasize him in the trailers. I have to problem with that. The problem that I have is that the trailers make an effort to make Tony Stark seem witty at the expense of his supposed co-stars, which implies that this won't be Avengers, this will be Iron Man 3. In other words, while it would be okay to emphasize Downey/Iron Man in the trailers, it shouldn't be done at the expense of the other characters. It implies that the movie's tone/approach will be the same. The other problem that I have is that I don't trust Whedon. He's great on the small screen, but he has never been involved in a big-screen movie that didn't suck. The original Buffy movie? Awful. The Firefly movie? Unwatchable. For the record, Cap is my favorite comic book character. Period.

The Firefly movie? Unwatchable. Here I strongly disagree. Serenity is a movie I can watch over and over again.

As I've said before, I watched Serenity before Firefly, and found it so badly written that I put off watching Firefly for about another year. An assessment, BTW, that was reinforced once I watched Firefly.

I'm quite the opposite - I sorta liked "Serenity" and hated and despised Firefly. I have zero faith in Whedon not to be a total fanboy of Kevin Smithian levels.
