Agreed on all points. You just really wish they would have cut the Clark/Lana wangsting a lot earlier.

Somehow the original reply to this I wrote disappeared, so...
Could not disagree with you more. Especially in light of of the critisicm.
I can only remember two black women in maid's dresses' at the top of my head. Martha, in period costume, 1913 maid, and her Mom, being held hostage by the Master, relegated to a maid's position as a humilation created by the Master. Both instances are in context with the story. So. Having a hard time seeing how this is a valid criticism, especially in light of the obvious racism Marth encounters in the Family of Blood story which is a side effect of sending a black woman back to 1913 England.
I can see more of a criticism in regards to the open and obvious embracement of alternative sexualty throughout the story given how uncomfortable people are with that, however, one of the things that has been blatantly obvious throughout the series is something that, in some places people still have issues with as well, is the plethora of interracial couples through out the series. Which, you know, kind of defeats your arguement.
So, when we come to the "God this was horrible due to the obvious cosmetic issues" arguement you're presenting what you have to look at is things such as the fact that the series took the whole time travel aspect of Doctor Who, through the course of the RTD run, and made use of it in both broad and short ways to make five very solid seasons of some of the best acted, best written television in the last 20 years.

"Well written, though Kirk would disagree with me on this." Unevenly written, let's be honest. There were moments of HOLY SHIT WIN (the Daleks looking at the Cybermen, in their first-ever onscreen meeting, and screaming, "THIS IS NOT WAR! THIS IS PEST CONTROL!") and JESUS FUCK FAIL (Russell's Unfortunate Implications light not blinking on when he managed to put all three black female characters into MAID costumes by the end of S3), which indicates to me that perhaps the biggest problem with Davies' tenure is that he didn't have anyone who was either inclined or capable of sanity-checking his work. In retrospect, I think RTD will be to Doctor Who what Jim Shooter was the Marvel Comics - he rescued the franchise, but by the time he left, it was past the time that he should have gone. Doctor Who would have been far better off if he hadn't had an entire gap year to build up a head of operating steam. Kinda like Joe Quesada then, he might have done some good stuff for Marvel, but he should have quit the job five years ago.
